Mountain Biking and Running Stock Photography in North Wales.

Time to shoot a little stock photography for Cultura and I’d got just the spot for it. I’ve waited a long time to shoot at this particular location with the right conditions but ever year something wasn’t right, mostly weather and diary. So with renewed determination for the autumn I kept an eye on the Met Office website with my fingers crossed. Eventually I saw a possible break in the weather coming up. I asked Kevin Harris to come up and model, and after two days sitting out rain and fog we decided to chance it and drive to Wales. By 2.30 in the afternoon we where there and the light was just incredible. After a quick look around we got to work and shot for two and a half hours and I couldn’t have be happier, I’d taken the Rangers with me just in case, but it turned out that we hardly used them, as the large flash in the sky was doing a fine job.

Child Stock Photography

Springtime in the UK is such a great time of year, so we took advantage and shot some stock pictures of our children. We went out walking around Shropshire and visited a few National Trust properties, keeping it very simple and just shooting a few pictures whenever we saw something that would work. We also noticed that the fields opposite my old school, Summerhill in Kingswinford where absolutely think with wild poppies so we also seized that opportunity and shot a few winners.

Hiking stock image shoot.

With the snow in the alps being so thin and fuel prices going through the roof I decided to stay home and shoot some stock images for Cultura. So I gave Kev Harris a call and we organized dates, I had decided to shoot in Shropshire for the first part and then head to Snowdonia for the second. In Shropshire we shot mostly hiking on Stiperstones, the light was really intense with great layering on the hills in the distance. Once in Snowdonia we headed to a new location towards Beddgelert and shot some camping images by the river, and then went for a fast hike/scramble up into the hills to try and shoot the sunset down the valley towards the sea, unfortunately the weather had a different plan and we didn’t get the sunset we wanted, but we still managed to get a few nice shots done.

Food Stock Images

I did a few food stock pictures this month, I started with a trip to my local Cup Cake shop called Queenies, where they make equisite little cakes, which incidentally, also go down really well with a cup of tea afterwards. I also got my hands dirty and baked a couple of  loafs of bread to shoot with some enamel bread and flour tins.

Portraits

I’ve recently been working on a series of portraits for the stock industry, I though I’d share this one with you as I think it’s quite cool, the detail in the eyes is spectacular, all thanks to the Nikon D3x.

20 minutes on the beach

I went down to Cornwall to shoot some interior pictures for Port Issac Cottages. After a day of shooting the house, I went down to Polzeath beach in the pouring rain to get a breath of fresh air and to see what was going to happen with the sunset, almost straight away the clouds broke and I managed to shoot a couple of really nice images in the last twenty minutes. Although silhouettes are pretty easy to shoot and a bit of a cliché they are also quite effective and I can’t resist.

Food Pictures

One of the best bits of advice I was ever given was “shoot what you love doing” and I have to say I do love eating. So here are a few images I’ve taken with Stuart Phillips, chef and patron at The Hundred House restaurant at Norton in Shropshire. I have to admit, I was close to tears when that treacle tart went back into the kitchen.

Fishing Retrospective.

With all the fabulous fishing going on I decided to have a look through my archive of fishing pictures and pull out a few memories from previous years and post em up. Some are on slide film some are digital pictures. I do love looking back every now and then, pulling out sheets and sheets of slides, it’s just like reading a diary…only better. Makes me smile!

Magical Mayfly

There’s many a time when I’m sitting on a chair lift in a blizzard, collar up, hat down, cold biting at me, that I drift off and dream of warm spring days by the river listening to bird song and the slurp of wild brown trout gobbling up Mayflies. So once the winter season is over and the gear is stowed away, one of the first things I reach for is the fly rod, and this year I splashed out and brought a new one, a Fladen 7 footer, which is a wonderful rod for the money. I also ordered my roving vouchers from the Wye and Usk Foundation and called my mate and mentor in all things fishy, Graham Priest.

We go back a fair way Graham and I, we’ve both worked on various angling TV productions in the past, such as saltwater fly fishing in Cuba with Matt Hayes. Graham has worked and presented a little on Wet Nets with Matt too, while I’ve shot features for Improve Your Coarse Fishing and Angling Times in the past.

So with vouchers in hand we ventured into Herefordshire to fish the River Arrow. A beautiful little river that rises in Powys in Wales, and meanders it’s way down to meet the with the River Lugg south of Leominster, Spring was in full swing, the whole river bank was lush with colour and the insect life was something to be seen. Walking through the dock leaves, squadrons of Damselflies lifted off and flitted around us, we watched them as they captured Mayflies on the air. It’s amazing to see such an abundance of life after such a cold winter, so I decided to shoot a fair bit of it and make it the theme for the day.

I was trying to travel light with my cameras so I just packed the D300s, I didn’t take my macro lens as the macro on my 24-70mm would do just fine. Unfortunately my new Nikon zoom lenses are too large for my Ewa Marine underwater housing, so I had to leave it at home, I think an investment in a small prime lens might be the answer for that little problem. I also had a play with Grahams Canon S90 compact, which I have to say produced some incredible results for such a tiny camera. See if you can spot them in the slideshow, they are slightly squarer than 35mm frame.

With so much insect life around we were sure that the fish would be biting so we walked to the end of the beat, I tied on one of Grahams magnificent hand made Mayflies, and slowly, we fished our way up stream. But the fish hadn’t read the script and were being rather tricky to catch! I suppose a big fish is a big fish for good reason, and that reason is, that he is crafty and not easily fooled. Every fish that rose seemed to be at the edge of the nastiest bramble bush, overhanging tree, or worst still, in it’s roots.

We fished the beat twice and I lost more than I caught, and that includes flies, I landed one but to be honest I was glad to just be there. Graham had better luck landing a couple of really nice wild brown trout, which had the most vivid red spots all over them. We released them back into the wild as there are more fishermen than fish these days.

The light was good all day and I managed to shoot quite a few pictures in and out of casts, but by 7pm we’d had enough, we packed up and went for a well deserved pint and a pork pie to finish a fantastic day in the English countryside. Next stop the Welsh hill country. If you wish to buy any of these pictures please Click Here

Frozen Motion

I had been working with Ben Benson on the last few days of the Consensio job so it only made sense to stay on for a few days longer and shoot some stock for Getty, so we headed for Vallandry hoping for better weather. The next morning was grey, cold and misty, so I headed down to the river to shoot some running water with a 3 stop ND filter, this holds light back and allows for a longer exposures, which gives you that dreamy effect. When I got down to the water there were some outstanding ice formations on the roots and branches so I spent a few hours scrambling up and down the river bank. I managed to get quite a few nice shots, I really like the stillness of ice against the movement of the water. In the afternoon the weather broke a little so we went up to Vallandry and shot some portraits of Ben with some new Salomon and Bolle gear, and a few landscape pictures as there was a superb sunset cranking. Then we packed our bags again and headed south.

That evening we arrived in Alpe d Huez on only the second day of their season to find the mountain with a reasonable covering of snow. The next morning was beautiful so we headed up to try and get some ski photography done. Although it’s early and the snow can be dodgy I do love the light at this time of year, I call it “blade lighting” it gets really intense after 2pm and the other bonus is you don’t have to wait long for the sunset. When the snow isn’t the best I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve to make things look a little better, so the use of wide angles, flash, slow shutters speeds and tight detail was the order of the day. Considering what we had to work with we didn’t do too badly. The next morning we where on our way home…job done.
