Snow and Rock Spring / Summer 2013 Catalogue

This was possible one of the best shoots I’ve done for a while, it was for Snow and Rock and it all started in the awe inspiring Chamonix valley. We spent the week shooting in Geneva, Annecy, Chamonix and Italy and pretty much everything just fell perfectly into place, the crew where fantastic, the weather was sensational the autumn colours where just starting to kick in, the rainbows appeared on que and the pasta and coffee took some beating.

Alice Cooper @ Caprices Festival, Crans Montana.

I went to Crans Montana in Switzerland this month to shoot the Caprices music festival, a nine day affair which happily mixes music with skiing. On the bill for one of the nights we where there was legendary horror rocker Alice Cooper. It was arranged for me to shoot the whole show rather than the obligatory first two songs and I have to say Alice really knows how to put on a show, he pretty much blow the roof off the place, not to mention his sizzling lead guitarist Orianthi. I shot 50gb of pictures as the whole thing was so photogenic with 10ft Snakes and Frankensteins rolling around the place. The D4 handled the whole thing beautifully and D800 didn’t to badly either.

Driven Photo Shoot in Tenerife

This was a shoot I did last year with the Driven Agency in Tenerife for Dare 2b, we shot mostly in Mount Teide national park which I have to say was pretty spectacular not to mention roasting hot, which was fine in February. We shot mostly mountain biking with Ben Savage and Hanna Barnes and road biking with Oscar Pereiro. We also did a few bouldering shots and a little running. I shot with the Quadra’s for a couple of shots but we also used reflectors as the sun was so bright. Shooting in a dormant volcano is slightly weird as the whole place is covered in what can only be described as cat litter and a fine brown dust, which is great for biking action shots but plays havoc with the camera gear. I was having to hide my camera up the front of my shirt immediately after every shot and changing lenses almost made me cry.

The Apprentice with N Photo Magazine

Here’s a shot from La Fouly, I shot it on the first morning of a trip with N Photo Magazine to Switzerland. The feature was called “the Apprentice” and the idea was for a lucky reader to travel out with us and I give them pointers on how to shoot action photography in the mountains. We worked here in La Fouly and also around the corner in the more well known resort of  Verbier. It worked out really well and we had great fun racing around the pistes and I think our reader Chris had a great time and learnt a few tricks. The shot above was a stitch from the D800 the detail in there is crazy.

Sharp For Men Magazine Evening Wear Photo Shoot

This is part two of the Sharp For Men magazine fashion photo shoot in Saas Fee, Switzerland. This was evening wear that was shot amongst the rocks and ice of a glacier. I used my Elinchrom Quadra’s to light the shots to add a little bit of drama to the background. It was a mixed day of weather and there was a bit of trouble with flashes getting blown over and trying to get our superb model  into position without getting covered in mud, falling of a cliff or getting hyperthermia. Over all it worked out quite well, especially with the help of Luke langsdale and the handsome devil in the suits Jack Guinness and Julie at the Swiss tourist board.

Sharp For Men Magazine Outdoor Clothing Photo Shoot

This is part one of a two part shoot I did for Sharp For Men which is Canada’s largest mens magazine. It was late July when I got a call from Luke Langsdale who is the fashion director at the magazine and asked if I’d be interested in the shoot. Well I haven’t seen Luke for a while, in fact the last time I worked with him he was the model, you may well remember him as he was the original 118118 guy with the handle bar mow, so I couldn’t resist catching up with him again. We discussed locations and yet again a glacier was required so the obvious choice for that time of year was….you guessed it…. Saas Fee….I think I should move there! All went well and the weather sort of behaved itself, I used the Nikon D800 for the job as they required very large file sizes. Many thanks to Jake Weeden from Next Models for all of the hiking, hard work and phone candy!

Snow & Rock 30 Year Anniversary Winter Catalogue

I’m really pleased to say that I’ve got the cover shot on Snow and Rock’s 30th anniversary winter catalogue…… a ski photographers dream!

I did all of the ski and snowboard action photography for this issue in Saas Fee, Switzerland. Luckily the weather was great for the whole shoot and the snow was fantastic in and amongst the crazy crevasses and seracs of the glaciers that litter the area. They look absolutely spectacular but they certainly keep you on your toes as they can be deadly.

What an Awesome place!

Petter Solberg / Ford Rally Test In The Alsace With ION

This was a job I did recently for ION with Rally driver Petter Solberg in the Alsace in France. As well as helping to film the event with camera man Noddy Gowerns incorperating overhead  zip wires and a micro heli using only ION Air Pro camera’s, my brief was also to shoot stills. This brought it’s own set of problems as the stills had to show a very small camera on a very fast moving car, also it was a test day staged on tarmac which is quite hard to get any sense of speed as there is very little dust or debris flying around behind the car. So to combat this I used a SB900 flash on camera and used slow shutter speeds in some shots. I also hired a 300mm lens from TFC and shot some on a cropped sensor on my D3x and at times had it lashed to my D300s which gave me around 400mm with the DX sensor. I have to say it’s a fairly hair raising experience having a Ford Fiesta on steroids screaming straight towards you.
