Mountain Warehouse Catalogue Winter 2012/13.

After a very brief visit home, it was a quick turn around and back to Alpe d’Huez to shoot the Mountain Warehouse Winter 12/13 brochure. This year it was all about lifestyle photography rather than action photography, which in hindsight, was an absolute blessing because believe it or not the weather was even worse than for the Ski Club shoot the week previously. It was snowing quite heavily which was great, but with it came fog! Nothing can kill an outdoor photo shoot stone dead like fog can, so we spent the next 4 days trying our best to get above it or below with varying degrees of success. At one point we went up to 3300m to get above it, which didn’t work at all and just succeeded in freezing the models hair in the -10 wind chill. When the weather is that bad I generally try and fill the frame with the model as much as possible, leaving less room for grey skies, I also punched up the colour on the sensor of my new Nikon D4, this was straight out of the box and I have to say is an utterly incredible bit of kit.

It all worked out in the end but it was hard going, good job I had such a great crew with me because even though the weather was bad, spirits where sky high and we had so much fun. Many, many thanks to Rebecca, Martin, Duncan and Charlotte from Sandra Reynolds, Anna, Craig and Emily from Mountain Warehouse and once again the Chamois and Underground for keeping us feed and watered (booze) :-)

National Geographic Traveller Magazine Front Cover.

Having been brought up on a steady diet of National Geographic Magazines from the early Seventies. I have to say I was pretty pleased to see one of my images, framed by that famous yellow border, gracing the front cover of their Traveller magazine.

Mountain Warehouse Front Covers

Outdoor clothing and equipment retailer Mountain Warehouse have just published their Autumn and Winter range, this year they have decided to do two separate catalogues, one for hiking and rambling, and one of ski wear. It seems like a long time ago since we shot the ski images in Alpe d’Huez, so it’s great to see it in print.
Many thanks to Issy, Ben, Peter, Rosanna, Adrian and Lisa Marie for the modeling expertise, and all the Mountain Warehouse crew, it was great fun shooting with them!

Mountain Warehouse Winter Catalogue 10/11.

Family in tow I arrived in Alpe d’Huez to shoot the Mountain Warehouse catalogue, the resort had had a huge season with a very deep snowpack which was still being topped up almost every night. We had some pretty good weather for the whole thing, just one afternoon of blizzards, which made a pleasant change. They wanted a mix of ski and snowboard shots with the emphasis on fun. So that’s what we did, went on the mountain and had a good time, it worked a treat. The Woodhall kids also did a fine job of modeling, and predictably where asking to get paid before they had finished the job. We stayed at the Hotel Chamois again and had great food upstairs, and a great time down stairs in the Underground bar. Many thanks to Gareth, Catharine and Adam for their huge support.

Mountain Warehouse

rwi054

March found me back in Alpe d’Huez but this time it was a shoot for Mountain Warehouse. They had commissioned me to shoot some images for their point of sale, window and store graphics. I arrived a few days early to try and shoot some stock before hand but the weather said otherwise with big blizzards hitting the mountains. Luckily the storms cleared just as the main shoot started and Alpe d’Huez did us proud with it’s legendary cloud inversions and blue sky. When it’s like that it’s hard to get it wrong.

Road trip.

11rw0006rm

The French alps had had a huge amount of snow over Christmas so I decided to get myself out there and shoot a good batch of stock for Cultura Images. I picked up Ben Benson, a good friend who is also an incredible skier and headed south to the mountains. Our first stop was Hotel Le Chamois in Alpe d’Huez. This is a groovy little hotel run by some friends of mine, it has a great atmosphere, great food and a cool bar, an excellent spot to work from. So we shot pictures in the old town and then up in the mountains, shooting ski lifestyle and action, giving the Elinchroms a good workout in the freezing cold. We had great weather and great apres ski, which sometimes merged into an evening out. It’s a hard place to leave, but I had to try and keep to my plan, which I have to admit was fairly flimsey.

We said our goodbyes and headed off to Serre Chevalier. I hadn’t been there for nearly ten years and I’d forgotten how huge it was. I did a ski season there in 1993, so I met up with old friends and worked a few days on the hill shooting action, the light was superb and so was the snow, we got some great images. I must get back there again, maybe this summer, if not, definitely next winter. Back in car again and off to Morzine where we met up with Catherine Peck and professional model who was doing a ski season there. We spent a couple of days shooting lifestyle, but unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worst and our plans for action pictures where finished. We’d had a great trip but, as always when your travelling, money gets eaten everyday, so I decided we had done enough and headed back to the UK and home, all in all a very successful trip.

Many, many thanks to Gareth, Catherine and Adam at the Hotel Le Chamois for their help and hospitality. To Mike Truelove for nearly killing us and to Lara, Howie and Sally for the breakfast, guiding and Tartiflet. Also a big thank you to Ben Benson for all of the hiking and amazing back flips and Catherine Peck for all of the help in Morzine.
