So within 12 hours of getting back from Verbier I was on my way to the George the Third Hotel in Penmaenpool, Dolgellau, to shoot the Spring / Summer 12 range for Mountain Warehouse. Once again I was working with Noddy Gowerns who was filming some product clips. After a great nights sleep in our superb rooms we woke up to fog which was pretty much down to toe level. Not to be put off and after a good breakfast we headed out and started work, happily the fog was starting to lift a little and our models Charlotte, Sarah, Duncan and Martin from Sandra Reynolds soon got into the swing of things. We had a couple of really good days up in the hills, down in the moss filled valleys and on the beautiful beaches of the Mawddach estuary. After which we returned to sunny Shropshire and met up with the kids at Carding Mill Valley in Church Stretton. All in all it was a really fun shoot, but after 4 days we all had to say goodbye, but only for a while until we meet up again in the alps in April. I then went home for a day before flying out to Tenerife for my next job.

Well here it is again, another year has come and gone and like the first fall of snow flakes in the alps the Snow and Rock catalogue launch heralds the start of the winter. As I said in my post in March, this year was especially challenging with the poor snow fall over the season. We shot it all in Obergurgl where fresh snow was rather thin on the ground, thankfully some of the brief was urban so as you can see from the shot above we had a ball in an underground car park. The Elinchrom’s where on fire for the ten day shoot, this year we used the Quadra flashes as well as the Rangers, and I have to say they where brilliant.

At the end of this month I flew out to Switzerland with a new client, Dare 2b. We where going out to shoot their AW12 range in Saas Fee. We had such a good week with incredible weather for the whole time whilst staying at the fabulous Ferienart Resort and Spa. I won’t post the finished results until they have been published but until then I’ll leave you with a landscape instead.

Having been brought up on a steady diet of National Geographic Magazines from the early Seventies. I have to say I was pretty pleased to see one of my images, framed by that famous yellow border, gracing the front cover of their Traveller magazine.

Here are a few pictures from a shoot I did on Snowdon with the Salomon Spring / Summer 2011 hiking range. The brief was for images that portray light fast walking in classic British scenery. But as soon as the gear arrived the spectacular autumn weather turned into weeks of rain and gales blowing all of the autumn colours away. I waited and waited, and arranged dates and cancelled and arranged again, then I saw a brief window of opportunity in the met offices forecast, made a few calls and within 12 hours we where on our way to North Wales, due to the lack of leaves it had to be up high or nothing.
There was blue blue sky the whole way there, but as usual Snowdon was covered in cloud, the forecast at the car park was for a clear mountain by late afternoon, and sure enough, after hiking up and sitting out the fog, it finally lifted and the most beautiful afternoon fell upon the mountain and we got to work. I know they aren’t the highest mountains in the world but when the light gets that good Wales is pretty hard to beat. A few days later I sent over the shots to Salomon, the marketing manager sent me a message saying ”Hey Ross, I’m loving these shots and bang on the brief I emailed over!”… Job done!

So here we have the new catalogue from Snow + Rock and I am very pleased to say I have the front and back cover. I said in my blog entry in April that I was holding back all of the best images from the shoot until the catalogue was launched. So here are a few of the best images from the shoot. Many thanks to all of the crew from out in Obergurgl and congratulations to Julio and Becky on the cover shot, one of 37 images from that face which they rode perfectly top to bottom, that after an initial 1/2 an hour hike up. I’ve put my favourite from those shots in the slideshow below, Enjoy!

Outdoor clothing and equipment retailer Mountain Warehouse have just published their Autumn and Winter range, this year they have decided to do two separate catalogues, one for hiking and rambling, and one of ski wear. It seems like a long time ago since we shot the ski images in Alpe d’Huez, so it’s great to see it in print.
Many thanks to Issy, Ben, Peter, Rosanna, Adrian and Lisa Marie for the modeling expertise, and all the Mountain Warehouse crew, it was great fun shooting with them!

Back home for a day from the warmth of St Tropez and it’s off to London to shoot in the city. I had to shoot a Front and Back cover for Cycle Surgery for their Summer 2010 catalogue. Luckily the sun was out for that “summer look” but it was sitting firmly at zero degrees. Unluckily I had brought raging tonsillitis back from France, so to combat this I donned two down jackets, I must have looked like the Michelin Man zipping in and out of the traffic shooting paparazzi style.
Trying not to get anyone else in the shot is tricky, as London is, as you can imagine, rammed with people. So for some of these shots, I waited, poised with my finger over the release button for that gap to open up in the crowds and I’d sneak off a shot. All this while the model froze in T shirt and shorts, and angry security guards demanded our shoot permits, only to look crushed when they where produced.

I went out to shoot some winter walking pictures for Getty a few days ago and really found the weather conditions to be fairly appalling, really just plain old nasty!
I had asked my model Ben to grow a nice big beard for the shots, but we just got so cold and wet we soon packed up and headed for the warmth and a cup of tea. So I decided to eliminate the weather factor and shoot some stock pictures in the studio instead, It worked out fine in the end, gradually losing the beard as we went. We got a little carried away on the original theme but what the hell.

What a crazy couple of months that’s been, it’s just flown past. I had made a few plans to shoot stock at some point, but they had to be shelved. October was spent mostly in the office or down in London, it’s a busy time of year with the Ski Show right in the middle of the month, I also had a wedding shoot from September to deliver and I had to edit 3 private shoots for Getty Images.
With October out of the way I started getting ready for a Mountain Warehouse shoot.
The brief was hiking & biking in the rolling hills of England, big landscapes, silhouettes and good fun. So we headed to the South Downs to try our luck, unfortunately our luck ran out, as did a Stella autumn that hadn’t seen any rain for nearly two months. Mother nature decided to make up for lost time with record rain falls and floods all over the South East, 100 mph winds in the Isle of Wight and “the storm of 20 years” ending a trying week. I will never again shoot on West Wittering beach either, not a very pleasant or friendly location!
So we rescheduled and moved to Shropshire to continue, I love shooting there, it’s like having our own private little Lake District, but without the lakes! Again we had some pretty mixed weather, but we did manage to shoot some nice images on and around the Long Mynd, Stipperstones and Carding Mill Valley.
The week I had in between the two shoots I managed to get a Getty Images submission out of the door and upload some fresh work to my Getty Assignment portfolio, and manage a trip to Scotland.
Busy, Busy, Busy!
