I popped over to North Wales again just before the onslaught of the recents rain storms and shot some running pictures, the light was quite nice but it didn’t quite have the intensity I was after so I dragged out the Elinchrom Ranger RX flashes and the Nikon D3x and shot a few pictures using heavy flash, I have to say I’m pretty pleased with the results, lets hope the images buyers of the world agree.

So within 12 hours of getting back from Verbier I was on my way to the George the Third Hotel in Penmaenpool, Dolgellau, to shoot the Spring / Summer 12 range for Mountain Warehouse. Once again I was working with Noddy Gowerns who was filming some product clips. After a great nights sleep in our superb rooms we woke up to fog which was pretty much down to toe level. Not to be put off and after a good breakfast we headed out and started work, happily the fog was starting to lift a little and our models Charlotte, Sarah, Duncan and Martin from Sandra Reynolds soon got into the swing of things. We had a couple of really good days up in the hills, down in the moss filled valleys and on the beautiful beaches of the Mawddach estuary. After which we returned to sunny Shropshire and met up with the kids at Carding Mill Valley in Church Stretton. All in all it was a really fun shoot, but after 4 days we all had to say goodbye, but only for a while until we meet up again in the alps in April. I then went home for a day before flying out to Tenerife for my next job.

Time to shoot a little stock photography for Cultura and I’d got just the spot for it. I’ve waited a long time to shoot at this particular location with the right conditions but ever year something wasn’t right, mostly weather and diary. So with renewed determination for the autumn I kept an eye on the Met Office website with my fingers crossed. Eventually I saw a possible break in the weather coming up. I asked Kevin Harris to come up and model, and after two days sitting out rain and fog we decided to chance it and drive to Wales. By 2.30 in the afternoon we where there and the light was just incredible. After a quick look around we got to work and shot for two and a half hours and I couldn’t have be happier, I’d taken the Rangers with me just in case, but it turned out that we hardly used them, as the large flash in the sky was doing a fine job.

After a few requests coming in for stock pictures and the OIA needing a few images from me, I decided to get out and shoot some running and hiking pictures around Shropshire and North Wales. Although it was still early in September the weather turned out to be fairly autumnal and it rained…lots! By the time we got to Snowdonia there were torrents of water pouring off the hills, but the cloud formations broke regularly and when they did the sunlight was really intense. Not one to keep my gear dry, we shot through some heavy showers and I think we got some good results. Which just goes to show that the moto ‘get out there no matter what’ pays off in the end.

Just had time to nip to North Wales for a quick shoot in between the office and my next job. I shot a few running shots and I wanted to test out the built in Nikon Wireless Flash system outside. I’m not too impressed, the range is pretty small and fairly hit and miss, it’s better on the D300s than the D3. The SB900′s are quite powerful though and I tried a few shots at slow shutter speeds using rear curtain sync.

Having seen the images that I shot for Profeet, the training shoe company Somnio decided that they wanted to use one for an advert, and here you have it, they are a revolutionary new design and they have this to say about it;
“Somnio is founded on the principle that running shoes should adapt to the individual runner and improve biomechanics. Every runner is different, and we believe that every pair of running shoes should be different too. Somnio needed an image to stand out for their advert in Running Fitness Magazine.”
Somnio Running are in stores nationwide, visit, www.somniorunning.co.uk for info.

Profeet. September 22nd, 2009

Profeet are opening a new concept store on the Fulham road, and it was up to me to furnish it with inspirational images. So they packed their staff into a minibus and picked me up on the way through to a jaunt around North Wales.We stayed at Betws y Coed in the heart of Snowdonia national park and spent a few days shooting running, hiking and biking around the hills and lakes with their crazy crew. We had a great time with a BBQ/bonfire in the hills one night and a quick visit to the Long Mynd in the Shropshire hills on the way back to London. We also shot a few pictures down in the smoke to mix it up a little. All in all it was a great shoot and everyone was pleased with the results. Many thanks to Shula and Hamish and all of the staff who helped to make this work out.

Summertime is here…at last, so I took advantage of some early blue sky and headed to a huge wind farm to shoot some stock for Cultura. I was aiming at shooting some pictures that involve wind turbines as well as some action of some description, so I plumbed for running and cycling as they are both quite ecologically friendly sports. I used the flashes for this shoot but it was pretty hard just to keep them upright, they put wind farms where they are for good reason! We ended up weighing down the tripods with bikes and camera bags and by the end of the shoot we where thoroughly shot blasted. It is a very erie place to spend any time, the noise of those big blades swinging round is constantly ringing in your ears.

Here are a few shots that I’ve been working on for stock, the idea was to zoom in to action that is generally gone in the blink of an eye and that no one really pays much attention to, and I also tried to use water to emphasize motion, all with the use of flash. After years of hiring large portable flashes, I decided to bite the bullet and buy some, I decided on Elinchrom. I went down to see the guys at The Flash Centre and they sorted me out with a Ranger RX speed kit with 2 A heads and Skyport remotes. It’s a pretty outstanding bit of kit.
So I went out and gave them a test run in the mud and water, all worked beautifully. I didn’t quite get all the shots I was after, but I managed a few gems.

With summertime gradually creeping away, I decided to grab one last chance to shoot some lifestyle sports stock for Cultura Images in North Wales. The weather was a little unpredictable but it came good in the end and we had a ball. We braved snakes, swamps, mosquitoes, and Welsh beer!! I used some Profoto flashes on this trip, one ended up in a lake, luckily the brolly kept it afloat long enough to fish it out before it blew up. Towards the end we stumbled upon some great locations for next summer…bring it on!
Many thanks to my good friends Richard Owen of Sun Valley Canoeing Co, and Jim Adlington of Planks Clothing.
